Sattu Drink, or Sattu Ka Sharbat, is a traditional Indian summer cooler that’s super healthy and an instant energy booster. It is prepared from Sattu, which is roasted Bengal gram (chickpeas) ground into a fine flour. This version of payasam is creamy flavoured with spices which are quite regular at home and it’s a wonderful natural coolant and very good for digestion too. It’s no cook, very quick and just right for breakfast or for a pick-me-up midway through the day.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Mixing Ingredients: Take a glass and put the Sattu flour, black salt, roasted cumin powder, black pepper powder, and regular salt.
  2. Add Water and Mix: Pour in about 1/4 cup of the chilled water. Mix thoroughly using a spoon or a small whisk until all the lumps are dissolved and you have a smooth paste. This prevents the formation of lumps later.
  3. Drink Up: Pour in remaining water and stir well.
  4. Flavoring: Stir in the lemon juice, chopped coriander leaves, and chopped green chili (if using).
  5. Serve: Taste and adjust the seasoning (add more lemon juice or salt if needed). Serve immediately, optionally with a few ice cubes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Sattu?

A: Sattu is a flour made from roasted Bengal gram (chickpea). Because it's already roasted, it is very easily digestible and can be consumed raw, making it perfect for instant drinks.

Q: Can I make a sweet Sattu Drink instead?

A: Yes! To make a sweet version, simply omit the salt, cumin, chili, and coriander. Replace them with 2-3 teaspoons of jaggery powder or sugar and a pinch of cardamom powder.

Q: Is Sattu good for health?

A: Absolutely. It is an excellent source of protein, fiber, iron, and magnesium. It is known to be a natural body coolant and is beneficial for regulating blood pressure and blood sugar.
